Bible Memory Challenge

On July 15, the Men's Group gave the sermon in Pastor Cliff's absence.  In their remarks, they talked about the importance of not only reading God's word but of committing it to memory.  Here is part of what they said:

"This is an excerpt from the article, 'Why Memorize Scripture,' by Linda Claire Scott, which was published in the May 1999 edition of Billy Graham's magazine Decision.  The article addresses the question:  'In what ways can memorizing and meditating on God's Word help us in our daily lives?'

  1. "Scripture can be a great comfort when we think that people are against us or when the world seems treacherous or when we have nowhere to turn.  'I remember your ancient laws, O Lord, and I find comfort in them.'  Psalm 119:52

  2. "If we have memorized Scripture verses, we will have a ready answer when someone asks why we believe.  'Sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you.'  1 Peter 3:15

  3. "Meditating on God's Word acts as a preventive against sinning.  'Your word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against You.'  Psalm 119:11

  4. "Memorizing Scripture provides the basis for formal and informal instruction of children.  'These words which I command you today shall be in your heart; you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.'  Deuteronomy 6:6-7

  5. "God says that our meditating will make us thrive.  'Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.  Then you will be prosperous and successful.'  Joshua 1:8 and 'Those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing.'  Psalm 34:10

  6. "Knowledge of God's Word can free us from bondage to sin and set us apart as disciples of Jesus Christ.  'If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.'  John 8:31-32."

The men then challenged the members of the congregation to memorize one Bible verse each week.  To that end, we will be putting up a new verse on our home page each week for you to memorize.  The scripture verse will also be posted in the weekly bulletin.  Everyone is invited to take part in this endeavor by submitting your favorite Bible verses for inclusion in this memory challenge.  Send your suggested verses to the Men's Group at rclcscjc@ma.ultranet.com, to the Church office at mfch@juno.com, or to the webmistress at npratt@ma.ultranet.com
